West Papua, formerly the Dutch colony of West New Guinea, was annexed by Indonesia in 1963. Six years later, a fraudulent Act of „Free“ Choice took place amid severe repression, yet the Act was endorsed by the United Nations, giving the seal of approval to Indonesia`s illegal annexations.
Since the 1960`s. the people of West Papua have suffered numerios
violations of their basic human rights: expropriation of their land,
racial discrimmination, arrest and detention, torture, disappearences
and massacres. A liberation movement which fights for the right of
self-determination has been active since the mid 1960`s. (...)Carmel Budiardjo, Liem Soei Liong WEST PAPUA: THE OBLITERATION OF A PEOPLE ISBN: 0 - 9506751 - 5 - 6 Verlag: TAPOL 1988 |
